Good leaders think about the future. Look ahead and plan accordingly. Obviously, you won’t always know what the future holds, but with learning and practice, your gut can steer you correctly more often than you think. Keep asking yourself where you’ll be six months from now, or even a year, then you can plan for it.
You must recognize the different talents of your team members. Figure out just who will benefit your company the most. This principle extends to hiring contractors or service providers in your personal life.
When you want to lead, keep your morals in mind. Make sure that any decisions that you make will sit right with you. If the decision does not feel right to you, then avoid it. Others may not have a similar level of morality, but it’s your call to make as a leader, not theirs.
Be transparent about possible problems when you can. It used to be that hiding business problems was the norm, but now great leaders do the opposite. What is the reason for this? There are many different forms of communication today. The truth will come out, one way or another. So, why not be the person controlling the message instead of reacting to it? Show appreciation for each individual worker in your team. It takes little time to write a note saying “thank you” or “good job” and it may mean quite a bit to a person that’s worked hard the whole day. A little acknowledgement can lift a mood, brighten a day and doesn’t cost you a thing.
Don’t do things in the workplace that people may see as deceitful or devious. In order to build trust as a leader, you must come through with your promises. If you boast about the great service your company provides, then be sure that everyone working for you recognizes what they need to do in order to provide it.
